Abstract

At the turn of the twentieth century, Argentina was recognized not only as an economic powerhouse but one of the top three nations in the world. It wouldn’t be long until the country hit political, economic, and social turmoil in the 1930s. However, almost a century later, the nation has not seemed to improve on its situation after eight sovereign defaults with the IMF. While the short answer to this problem lies in the political and economic data, taking a deeper dive into the sociological tendencies of the nation provides the underpinning for these answers.

My name is Lorenzo Solari and I am a senior at Wakefield School. I plan on studying Economics at Boston University. I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where I remained for about three years before moving to the United States. As I was raised by Argentine parents, I've observed the love-hate relationship that my family has had with the South American nation. For me, I've always had an affinity to truly understand why Argentina's potential for greatness has fallen short. My senior thesis attempts to understand Argentina's political and economic struggle, all while providing insight beyond the numbers.
